Gorgeous graphics (with poor optimization for less capable machines) and an intriguing premise, but the story drags on and mechanics become a bore rather quickly. In Peregrine, you play Abi, a warrior who seeks to right the wrongs of a forsaken world. The land, called the divide, has been brought to ruin by the pursuit of Oblion, a gem which promises eternal life. Your task as Abi is to find a sacrifice to the gods that brought waste upon your land so the gods may be atoned and humanity can begin to rebuild. The visuals, especially what the dev calls "Vistas", are absolutely gorgeous, using high contrast and sharp edges to bring out the wasted atmosphere. My only gripe is there is little to do to optimize the graphics: resolution cannot be altered beyond dragging the window, so the game runs quite slowly on low-end machines. The puzzle mechanics certainly aren't unique: you possess creatures around you, through telekinesis, that perform specific tasks, such as moving large objects or pushing moveable ones. However, you possess the same three creatures throughout the entire game (from 5 to 10 hours in length), and all the puzzles are of relatively similar difficulty and form. I do appreciate the frequent use of checkpoints. In terms of how the story is presented, you are guided by a narrator throughout the entire game, with frequent interjections from your mother and father talking to you via your comm unit. THIS GETS ANNOYING QUITE QUICKLY. You can skip a sentence of dialogue at a time, but you cannot skip the whole thing. If you quit the game and reload it, you will have to click sometimes for 30 seconds of dialogue you've already read before proceeding. The voice acting is quite good, and enhances the game. However, the narrator talks way too much, often narrating things that are obvious, describing scenes you see yourself, or summarizing tasks you've just completed. The game does not show as much as it says (narrator says "Abi picked up the keycard" rather than showing me the card), and by the end relies heavily on long lines of text to drive the plot.A quick note on achievements: Most are unmissable (you need them to complete the story), but a couple require random chance (1\/6 each). In order to get these achievements, you have to quit the level and reload from the checkpoint until it randomly happens. This is super annoying and petty.Would I play Peregrine again? No. Did I enjoy the game? Appreciated the graphics, but by the end I was grinding to finish the game, and it felt more like a chore.Ratings:Aesthetics\/Graphics: 5\/5Story: 3\/5Game Presentation: 1.5\/5Puzzles\/Mechanics: 2.5\/5Price: 3\/5Overall: 2.5\/5
